Las bibliotecas como centros culturales dinámicos

El nuevo director de las Bibliotecas de Harvard University, Robert Darnton, es muy sabio en relación al rol que deben tener las bibliotecas del siglo 21:

The University Library’s new director called on his staff yesterday to embrace the Internet and harness it for the “diffusion of scholarship.”
Robert C. Darnton ’60, who studies the history of books and taught at Princeton before coming to Harvard this year, emphasized that libraries are not “warehouses of printed paper,” but “dynamic cultural centers.”

Más aún,  piensa publicar un libro electrónico con la idea de que los visitantes puedan editarlo y así crear múltiples versiones del mismo. Cuando le señalaron que esto podía ser problemático, su respuesta fue genial:

Darnton responded that he would be delighted if there were many different versions of his book, calling the traditional idea of a set copy “an illusion.”  “The notion of the final fixed copy is giving way,” he said. “Texts are always in flux.”

Me parece que con este señor de director, las bibliotecas de Harvard están en buenas manos.
